In 2016, nearly half of the world’s population was at risk of malaria. There were 216 million cases of malaria in 2016, leading to 445 000 deaths. This dangerous disease remains the major killer in children under 5 years old, taking the life of a child every two minutes.

According to the WHO, the regions of South-East Asia, Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific and the Americas are particularly at risk. Malaria can affect everyone, however, infants, pregnant women, patients with HIV/AIDS, non-immune immigrants, mobile populations, and travelers are at higher risk of contracting malaria.

What are the symptoms of malaria?

Malaria is an acute febrile illness. Symptoms usually appear about 10 to 15 days after the infective mosquito bite and can include fever, headaches and chills, which might be mild, making it hard to diagnose the disease. This is especially dangerous given the fact that malaria can progress to severe illness, often leading to death, if not treated within 24 hours.

Children with severe malaria frequently develop symptoms such as severe anemia, respiratory distress in relation to metabolic acidosis, or cerebral malaria which consists of several neurological alterations. In adults, multi-organ involvement is also frequent.

The best treatment is prevention

Malaria is not contagious, only vectors, like mosquitoes, can transmit the disease. If a mosquito bites a person infected with malaria, it can transmit the disease to many other people. Therefore, the best way to avoid being infected with malaria is to make sure to keep away from mosquitos.

Most people resort to mosquito repellents to protect themselves from dangerous mosquito bites, however, these often contain dangerous chemicals that are harmful to your body and the environment. Not only can common repellents result in skin irritations, it has also been proven that DEET, a chemical ingredient used in most mosquito repellents, can result in damage to the brain and other organs, as it is absorbed through the skin and enters the bloodstream.

Luckily, nature is kind enough to offer a natural solution: neem. Using neem as a repellent and mosquito larvicidal has shown to be extremely successful, with tests proving that its effectiveness against mosquitoes and other vector insects is close to 100%, all while being environmentally friendly.

What is a GMO? A GMO is a genetically modified organism, either a plant, an animal, a microorganism or any other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenetic technology. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. One of the objectives of developing plants based on GM organisms is to improve crop protection through the introduction of disease-resistant genes, or through increased tolerance towards herbicides.

What can genetically modified foods do to your body?

The health risks of GMO foods have been studied for years. Tests have shown that GM proteins have known allergenic properties, and that GMO soy, corn and papaya might cause allergies. Also, it has been proven that GM soy drastically impairs your digestion and cause you to become sensitive and allergic to a variety of foods.

It has been recorded that genetically modified plants that usually produce their own insecticide, based on a bacterial toxin, has led to BT-resistant bugs, which could result in produce deeply contaminated with pests and bugs. Learn more about deep cleaning and cleaning hacks for living with pets here. Virginia Scientists have concluded that the effects of the ingestion of GMO plants, or pesticides derived from GMO plants may lead to cancer, neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and a number of serious health concerns.

Also, GMO food supply is unsustainable, it uses more resources than traditional agriculture and contaminates the lands with chemicals and residues of GMO components.

Glyphosate is the most commonly used herbicide in GMO crops, and has been defined as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Its ingestion has been linked to the development of human breast cancer cells due to its estrogen-like qualities.

It is important to understand that the negative effects of GMO foods are not only limited to the produce that has been genetically modified, but that they also affect animal products where cattle have been fed with GMO crops.

The solution?

First of all, try to avoid all products that don’t state they are GMO-free. Always choose organic farming practices that avoid the use of chemicals that are hazardous to humans, animals and the environment. Organic farming practices that rely on natural crop care solutions like neem will provide you with more nutrient-rich foods, while also eliminating possible side effects linked to GMO crop production.

Influenza, commonly known as “the flu”, is an infectious disease that can spread easily and attack a wide range of the world’s population. Symptoms can be mild to severe and include fever, a sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, a runny nose and feeling tired. While mostly harmless, it can become more dangerous for high-risk groups, and even end in death. Worldwide, annual epidemics are estimated to result in about 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness, and about 290 000 to 650 000 respiratory deaths, according to the WHO.

Could the influenza virus be treated with neem?

Since 5,000 BC, Azadirachta Indica, or neem, has been celebrated for its remarkable healing properties. In Indian Ayurvedic, it is referred to as “the universal healer of all ailments”. Its names in Sanskrit are either “Nimba” which translates into “giver of good health” or “Arista” which means “perfect, complete, imperishable”.

For thousands of years, the neem tree has been used to treat deadly diseases, safeguard human health and provide agriculture with safe alternatives to commonly used fertilizers and pesticides. Neem has proven antimalarial, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antioxidant properties, and is effective against inflammation, infection, fever, skin disease and dental illness. Today, the broad benefits of neem are being studied by institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Oxford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the National University of Singapore, in order to further investigate how its more than 200 compounds could be used to treat conditions ranging from psoriasis to skin damage caused by chemo-radiation, and to evaluate the plant’s effectiveness as a cure for influenza.

Neem vs. Influenza

A recent scientific investigation found that hyperoside, a compound exclusive to the neem tree, can disable the influenza virus from replicating and causing infections. Published in the BioMed Central’s Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal, this study designed, screened and tested the universal treatment.

Vaccines that stimulate the body’s immune response have long been available, however, the development of an effective protection has become a problem of high concern due to the virus’ ability to mutate easily from one year to the next. Neem’s hyperoside is a solution to this problem as it disables a critical part of the virus – the neucloprotein or viral protein – that does not adapt over time. 89% of this viral protein remains the same in influenza strains and plays an important role in its life cycle. Once damaged, the virus becomes unable to duplicate and create an infection. An easily acquirable solution like neem could be used to prevent deaths and to treat the many people who are hospitalized every year due to influenza epidemics. When compared to the hundreds of possible compounds needed to create a vaccine, neem seems to be the most effective cure.

Have you ever considered that the many chemicals contained in your beauty and personal care products might have severe effects on your health? According to Ecowatch, there are around 84,000 chemicals on the market, and although we come into contact with many of these chemicals every day, merely 1% of them have been studied for safety.

The average male uses up to nine personal care products every day, ranging from shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorant to sunscreen and soap. Women are even more at risk of being exposed to dangerous chemicals, as they usually use 15 or more products daily, including makeup and anti-aging creams, which can contain an average of up to 168 different chemicals. Research has shown that these chemicals can even be passed on to the unborn child of a pregnant woman – so far, more than 300 different contaminants have been detected in the umbilical cord blood of newborns.

How do these chemicals harm you?

While some chemicals might be harmless to humans, others are severely hazardous and can cause irreparable damage. These are some of the chemicals you should avoid:

 • Formaldehyde, a known carcinogen that has also been linked to spontaneous abortion and low birth weight. It is commonly used as a preservative to kill and inhibit the growth of microorganisms in a wide range of personal care products, from cosmetics, soaps, and shampoos to nail polishes and hair gels.
 • Benzoyl Peroxide, a chemical that is often present in acne products. According to the MSDS it might be a tumor promoter that acts as a mutagen and produces DNA cell damage.
 • Parabens are present in around 85% of all cosmetics. They have been found in breast cancer tumors and may contribute to sterility in males, hormone imbalance, and early puberty. Despite these health risks, they do not need to be listed as ingredients on the product label.
 • Tridosan is a synthetic antibacterial ingredient and EPA-registered pesticide that is suspected of being a major cause of cancer in humans and a severe threat to the environment.

Neem vs. Chemicals

Neem is an ancient tree that has been used as a medicinal plant for thousands of years. Offering thousands of health benefits without any negative side effects, neem can be used as an effective replacement for the above mentioned chemicals.

How can you start integrating neem into your daily routine? How about changing your habit of relying on acne products containing Benzoyl Peroxide and trying a natural solution like neem instead? With its antibacterial and antiseptic effects, neem is a great way to treat and prevent acne. Rich in Omega 3 & 6 and vitamin E, neem will leave your skin feeling hydrated like never before and improve its elasticity.

With its thousands of healing properties, neem truly has the potential to replace the harmful chemicals used in cosmetics. Think about all the chemicals you are using in your daily routine and putting on your skin and switch to one of nature’s best solutions: neem!

]]>
What would happen if the entire farming industry turned organic? According to the Organic Trade Association, if every farmer in the U.S. produced organic foods, 500 millions pounds of harmful pesticides could be eliminated per year.

Why Should We Change to Organic Farming?

Traditional farming involves the use of thousands of chemicals such as synthetic pesticides, which have severe effects on the environment. For one, pesticides allow disease resistance to build up in plants, weeds, plant-eating-insects, fungi, and bacteria. The chemicals used to produce synthetic pesticides not only contaminate the soil, but also our water supply and air, and can stay adhered to the ground for decades.

Healthy soils grow healthy food, but if the soil is contaminated with thousands of synthetic pesticides and chemicals, these will adhere to crops. Over the past 9 years, the USDA Agricultural Research Service has shown that compared to conventional farming, organic farming methods are more successful in building up organic soil matter. This means that one teaspoon of compost-rich organic soil can have as many as 600 million to 1 billion beneficial bacteria from 15,000 species. One teaspoon of soil treated with chemicals on the other hand may carry only around 100 beneficial bacteria.

Erosion is another reason why you should support organic farming. Issues related to erosion can affect land, food supply, and humans. Luckily, organic farming practices help diminish erosion. A study that compared organically and chemically treated wheat fields showed that organic fields featured about eight inches more of topsoil and that erosion was only 2/3 of the erosion present in chemically treated field.

Organic farming can also diminish the effects of global warming. A test run by the Rodale Institute since 1981 has shown that a healthy organic agriculture system can actually reduce carbon dioxide and help slow climate change. If around 10,000 medium sized farms in the U.S converted to organic production, they would store as much carbon in the soil as the equivalent to taking 1,174,400 cars off the road or reducing car miles driven by 14.62 billion miles.

What is Neem’s Role in Organic Farming?

Neem is a completely natural pesticide that doubles as a fertilizer. It is eco-friendly and does not contaminate soils, nor does it cause any damage to the fauna that surrounds the plantations, as it repels bugs instead of killing off beneficial insects. Neem has the potential to be used on thousands of organic farms, as it is easily accessible and can grow even in the least fertile conditions.

Have you ever wondered how long it takes to generate soil? Generating only three centimeters of top soil can take over 1,000 years! According to the United Nations, if current rates of soil degradation continue, the world’s top soil could be gone within 60 years. Today we are losing an impressive amount of 30 soccer fields of soil every minute.

What are the causes and consequences of soil degradation?

Soil degradation can be caused by chemical-heavy farming techniques, deforestation and the resulting erosion and, of course, global warming. Soils play a key role in absorbing carbon and filtering water, and their destruction is creating a vicious cycle: less carbon is stored, resulting in global temperature rises and further land degradation. 95% of the food we eat comes from the soil, making it the basis of human life. In order to ensure food security for a growing population, it is therefore necessary to adopt new farming methods that avoid the loss of arable and productive land. Unless we change the way we produce crops, researchers estimate that the amount of arable and productive land per person in 2050 will be merely a quarter of the level in 1960.

While scientists are yet to find a definite solution to this global threat, it has been confirmed that organic farming is humanity’s single best option humans to preserve the soils.

Could neem be the solution?

As a completely natural pesticide and fertilizer, neem is an ideal tool in organic farming. It does not pollute soils or the air and is a completely environmentally friendly alternative to efficiently replace commonly used synthetics. It strengthens plant roots and promotes foliage growth by increasing nutrients in the soil. Neem also offers numerous benefits for the human health, and is harmless when ingested – unlike synthetic pesticides which have been linked to numerous serious illnesses. If you have your own garden, try to grow foods organically! If not, remember that buying organic foods not only offers improves your health and nutrition, but also makes you help preserve the earth’s soils. Protect yourself and Planet Earth by using and supporting neem as a natural pesticide!

Have you ever found yourself scratching your scalp to try and relieve the itch and found white flakes all over your scalp, head and shoulders? Then you are probably suffering from dandruff.

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is a skin condition that mainly affects the scalp, causing itchiness and flaking. Your skin starts to shed these dead cells when your scalp is too dry. The main cause for this condition is unclear, but it’s generally attributed to environmental and genetic factors such as seborrheic dermatitis. It can also be caused by certain water conditions or not shampooing enough. Even though dandruff generally only affects the scalp, it can worsen to a point that it starts affecting the face and other parts of the skin as well.

There are many chemical solutions on the market to solve this problem, be it antifungal creams or shampoos. However, these are very often chemical based and can harm your long strands.

Looking for a natural solution to dandruff?

Then neem oil is the answer. This wonderful oil makes your scalp smooth and can cure the itchiness and dryness caused by dandruff. With its many antifungal, antibacterial and hydrating properties, it literally helps eliminate the problem from the roots. Adding neem oil to your shampoo or buying neem-based shampoos will do wonders. What’s more, neem oil contains beneficial compounds such as Vitamin E and Omega 3, that enhance the appearance of your hair, nourish and protect it, while boosting growth and leaving your hair beautiful and shiny. Have you ever tried using neem for your hair care routine? Let us know in the comments below!

Have you ever asked yourself how we can manage to feed an entire world with safe and sustainable agriculture?

Agriculture has always been the key to humanity’s survival. However, in this time and age, feeding the world in a safe and sustainable manner is becoming an increasingly difficult task – especially given today’s global challenges, such as a rising global population and degradation of arable land. One of the primary obstacles that needs to be overcome to ensure sustainable food security is the current economic thought system that has prevailed since the industrial revolution: producing at maximum capacity at any cost.

Luckily, the pursuit of sustainable solutions and an eco-friendly economy has led to a growing global market for agricultural biologicals such as biopesticides and biofertilizers. The market was worth $3 billion in 2016, accounting for 5% of the global crop protection industry. Forecasts estimate that the bio-pesticide market will grow to $7.6 billion by 2022 with a compound annual growth rate of 13.4%. With these growth rates, the bio-pesticide market is expected to overtake synthetics by 2050 – great news for our environment!

Neem as an effective biopesticide in sustainable agriculture

The word biopesticide is an abbreviation of the word “biological pesticide”. Biopesticides are obtained from organisms such as plants, bacteria and other microbes, fungi, nematodes etc. They are very important components for pest management that substitute synthetic chemical plant protection products. As biopesticides are all-natural, non-toxic and free of chemicals, they are a great tool in organic farming.

Neem acts as a repellent that is harmless to beneficial insects but keeps bugs, pests and plague from eating on plants. Not only that, but neem is proven to be one of the most effective and harmless of scalable biopesticides available on Earth, and it also works as a biofertilizer that allows for greener agriculture.

How can you contribute to sustainable agriculture?

You can support sustainable farming, even if you do not grow your own produce or work in agriculture. Buy products grown with organic biopesticides like neem, and you will no longer have to worry about ingesting all the toxic components of synthetic pesticides or harming your environment!

For decades there has been a debate whether organic foods are healthier than conventional foods. But what exactly are the differences between organic and conventional crops and how does an organic diet impact your health?

According to a new study by Newcastle University on organic versus conventional crops, organic farming methods have a positive impact on your health, as they lead to substantially higher levels of antioxidants and lower levels of pesticides in crops. Antioxidants have been linked to lower risk of cancer and other diseases in humans, and – because nature is wise – plants produce their own antioxidants to defend themselves from pests and diseases. However, whenever synthetic pesticides are applied, they cause plants to lose their ability to generate antioxidants for their own defenses.

How do organic foods benefit you?

 • Organic crops contain an average of 17% more antioxidants than conventionally grown crops.
 • Some organic crops, including fruits, vegetables, and grains, have as much as 60% higher concentrations of antioxidant compounds than conventional crops.
 • The level of flavanones, which are associated with a lower risk of a stroke, were 69% higher in organic foods.
 • Overall, levels of synthetic pesticides were found to be 10 to 100 times lower in organic foods than in conventional foods.

Does this mean that crops can’t be farmed with pesticides?

Organic farming consists of providing you, the consumer, with the freshest, most tasty and authentic foods while respecting natural life-cycle systems. This means no GMO’s, no synthetic pesticides and no unnatural solutions can be applied to crops. However, natural pesticides like neem, that do not harm the human body or kill beneficial insects, can be used. The neem tree has been used as an organic crop care solution for centuries! It has many medicinal and agricultural appliances, which is why foods produced using neem do not lead to harmful side effects. Neem’s main compound, Azadirachtin, works as a natural repellent for pests, that does not kill the insect on contact, but instead prevents them from feeding on the plant. Another plus for neem is that it is antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral, and also works as a completely natural fertilizer. Have you tried using neem for your garden or farm? Let us know in the comments below!

Did you know that mosquitoes are often referred to as the deadliest animal in the world? It is almost hard to believe that such a small insect can be considered even more deadly than some of the most ferocious animals…but, what exactly makes it so dangerous?

The World’s Deadliest Animal

Mosquitoes are vectors, living organisms that transmit infectious diseases between humans or from animals to humans. Their ability to carry and spread diseases to humans is the cause of millions of deaths and hundreds of millions of cases of illnesses around the world. Zika, dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever are some to name, and responsible for more than 17% of infectious diseases, causing more than 700,000 deaths every year, according to the World Health Organization.

Today, more than 3.9 billion people – more than half the world’s population – live in areas where disease-transmitting mosquitoes are present. As a result, sustained mosquito control efforts are imperative to prevent the spread of these diseases. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are becoming more and more resistant to the traditional and previously developed chemical solutions and synthetic pesticides.

Neem’s Role in Fighting the Mosquito Menace

Using neem as a repellent and mosquito larvicidal has shown to be extremely successful in fighting this global mosquito menace, as tests have proven that it is close to 100% effective against mosquitoes and other vector insects. For centuries people in ancient India have been relying on neem to fight mosquitoes and other insects. Due to its high rate of effectiveness against vector populations of mosquitoes, scientists have started to include it in new research involving nanotechnology. Scientists from India have been working to formulate a bio-based nanoinsecticide, consisting of an emulsion based on neem urea, which is rich in antiviral and antimalarial properties and can efficiently control the vector mosquito population.

This formulated insecticide can control the vector mosquito populations that cause dengue, malaria and other diseases. Another plus for this new nano-solution is that it possesses beneficial fertilizing effects for the soil ecosystem. Reputable construction claims consultants are at your service at www.vertexeng.com company. Neem urea is the key ingredient that is making this neem biopesticide eco-safe, allowing the biopesticide to control the mosquito menace in a benign way.

As the world combats dreadful vector-borne diseases, this new research is becoming a viable solution to the excess application of conventional pesticidal compounds that tend to harm the ecosystem, positioning the application of nanotechnological techniques as a disruptive practice in healthcare.

If synthetic pesticides are killing bugs… What are they doing to your body? The fact that they have been used for decades has created a completely false sense of security among people. But what if you were told that commonly used pesticides are to blame for hormonal unbalance, food allergies and many more daily health issues?

It has been proven that consuming pesticides even in incredibly tiny doses could set a person up for health problems later in life, as synthetic pesticides can remain inside your body for decades. Here are just some ways how pesticides are harming your body:

Food Allergies

Researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City found that food allergies are related to pesticide ingestion. People with high levels of herbicide 24-D and chlorine used to disinfect tap water were more likely to suffer from milk, egg, seafood and peanut allergies. This could be due to synthetic pesticide compounds acting as an antimicrobial inside your body and ridding you from your body’s natural immune reactions.

Memory loss

A review from University College London recently found that even low levels of exposure to pesticides cause significant damage to cognitive function, affecting your memory and the speed at which you process information.

Diabetes

The Endocrine Society recently stated that tolyfluanid, a fungicide used on farm crops, creates insulin resistance in fat cells. Also, a study published by the Diabetes Care declares that overweight people with higher levels of pesticides in their body are the most suitable candidates for developing type 2 diabetes.

Cancer

Lymphona, leukemia, soft tissue sarcoma, brain, breast, prostate, bone, ladder, thyroid, colon, liver and lung cancers have been linked to pesticides in 260 studies.

Neurological Functioning

Many pesticides effectively kill bugs by throwing odd normal neurological functioning. The same effect seems to appear in children as well. In 2011 a Harvard study found an important link between kids with ADHD and the amount of organophosphate pesticide residue in their urine.

Obesity

Some synthetic pesticides act as hormone disruptors, or in other words, they act like fake versions of naturally occurring hormone in your body, disrupting your hormonal balance and interfering with your body’s ability to regulate a healthy release of hormones. According to a study by the Environmental Health Perspectives, more than 50 pesticides are classified as hormone disruptors and some even promote metabolic failures and obesity as they accumulate in your cells.

Birth Defects

Spring and summer months are the time of the year when pesticides are used the most, therefore, higher synthetic pesticide levels turn up in surface waters, increasing the risk of exposure. Babies conceived during these months show a higher rate of birth defects like spina fibida, cleft lip, clubfoot and down syndrome.

The Solution to Pesticides’ Effects?

All of these risks are reason enough to try to find an alternative to synthetic pesticides. Luckily, it has been proven that neem can be used as a very effective natural pesticide which represents no risk when consumed and in fact has many health benefits. Protect your crops and produce only with neem pesticide and avoid suffering from any of these severe side effects. Neem doesn’t kill the bugs, it works as a repellent that is distasteful to bugs and will keep them away even from their favorite plants. Because nature knows best, choose neem as your primary natural pesticide!

Huntington’s disease affects more than 10 million people around the world. The United States National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke defines Huntington’s Disease as an inherited disorder that causes degeneration of brain cells and neurons in motor control regions of the brain and other areas.

Symptoms of Huntington’s Disease

Huntington’s Disease has serious effects on the human body that worsen over time. These might include abnormal body postures, uncontrolled movements and changes in the behavior that involve emotional, judgmental and cognitive alterations. People who suffer from Huntington’s Disease might also face lack of concentration and short-term memory loss.

While Huntington’s Disease evolves, it often greatly restricts patients lives, as it can lead to severe complications when walking, talking or completing simple motor or social tasks. Sometimes these even evolve into aggressive outbursts, anxiety, depression, irritability, and social withdrawal. So far scientists haven’t been able to find a cure for Huntington’s Disease, which makes the situation even more unbearable for patients. This is also leading to the waste of financial resources through delaying care and putting people into more expensive care settings which are an increased burden on society.

Neem as a Potential Cure for Huntington’s Disease

Even though healthcare groups all around the world have been trying to find a cure, they haven’t been successful. However, scientists from the National Brain Research Centre in Manesar and the Bose Institute in India, have now found that Azadiradione, a compound extracted from neem seeds can potentially help delay the progression of Huntington’s Disease through the activation of an enzyme that helps degrade the accumulates mutant protein, and activates the protein that helps restore normal protein balance in brain cells. Treating the effects of these diseases with natural solutions like neem represents a major advance in scientific health findings, for it will allow a large amount of the population who suffer from brain diseases to improve their quality of life.

From oil spills that cause the devastation of entire ecosystems, to deforestation, and even air pollution, fossil fuels have caused many damages to our planet. Even though sustainable alternatives like biofuel exist, fossil fuels are still the most frequently used combustibles. As the primary source of CO2, they are responsible for creating around 65% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. It has been proven that if these emissions continue at their present rate, the Earth’s surface temperature could exceed historical values as early as 2047.

The impacts of fossil fuels

Most fossil fuels are made through geological processes that extract oils such as coal or petroleum from many kilometers underground, breaking some of the layers of the subsoil and often contaminating them with non-intentional spills. But what happens when these spills happen at sea? Thousands of gallons of water get contaminated, exterminating the home of numerous species. In order to stop harming our ecosystem in such a drastic way, we need to stop supporting the use of fossil fuels and instead demand a sustainable alternative to these harmful combustibles: biofuels.

What is biofuel?

Biofuel is an environmentally friendly fossil fuel and a strong enough source of energy to become the main combustible of our everyday life. It is a renewable fuel made from contemporary biological processes, that does not emit harmful fumes and cause environmental pollution. Therefore, biofuel needs to become an essential part of our everyday life; not only to stop damaging our planet, but also to use a source of energy that is completely renewable.

Neem’s viability for biofuel production

Neem is playing an important role in the development of sustainable alternatives to commonly-used contaminating fuels. According to a study published by Scientists from Anna University, neem has the potential to be used for the production of biodiesel, as its seeds contain 45% oil, which could very easily be used as vegetable oil for engine fuels. Not only is neem a cleaner source for generating fuels, it is also a cheaper one. What’s more, experiments demonstrated that biodiesel produced using neem oil could significantly reduce smoke and carbon monoxide emissions! Once again, neem is showing great potential to be used as an environmentally friendly alternative that will help create a greener environment in the future.

Have you ever heard about a Ministry of Health creating a Department of Traditional Medicine?

If  you have never heard about  anything like this, here’s what you need to know: many countries around the world have started to recognize the value of traditional medicinal practices and created national Departments of Traditional Medicine. The aim of these departments is to approach people and benefit from their knowledge, develop proactive policies and implement action plans that will strengthen the role that traditional medicine plays in keeping its population healthy.

Buthan, Myanmar, and Ghana are great examples of states where this initiative has first been put into practice through the establishment of recognized legal authorities responsible for planning and developing policies for traditional and alternative medicines in the country.

Now, Nigeria’s Ministry of Health is following these regional efforts towards a higher recognition of traditional medicine and has announced its intentions to create its own Department of Traditional Medicine. This new department will be in charge of ensuring the right development and integration of traditional and alternative medicine as an official medical practice within the National Health Care System.

The Nigerian Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, stated that he will source for ₦100 million for the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) in order to make this project a success. In addition, having recognized neem’s value in Nigerian traditional medicine, the Minister of Health has announced that the government will invest an additional amount of ₦10 million (NGN) to be used only for research into neem products. According to the Minister of Health, “Everything about the plant is commercialized for use and it is all over Nigeria especially in the north. It is a multi-billion naira plant.”

The neem tree’s antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antimalarial properties, make it a high-value resource for traditional medicine with incredible healing capacities. The tree has long been considered a key natural asset to tackle ills and diseases and with this governmental boost, its importance in modern medicine will continue to develop. The international community is increasingly moving towards a sustainable and regenerative way of thinking, and once again Neem is playing a crucial part in this movement.

A new trend is redefining the global fashion industry and this time it is not related to seasons or colors. Instead, the industry is turning to environmentally friendly, sustainable fashion!

Currently, the fashion industry is one of the largest industrial polluters in the world, second only to the oil industry. Valued at $3 trillion dollars, the fashion industry employs around 60 million people worldwide and represents 2% of the world’s GDP. However, it has never been an earth-friendly industry. With cotton representing nearly half the fibre used to make clothes and other textiles worldwide, unsustainable cotton farming is mainly to blame for this. Despite the fact that only 2.4% of the world’s crop land is planted with cotton, it accounts for 24% and 11% of the global sales of insecticide and pesticides respectively. What’s more, about 2,700 liters of water are used to produce just one cotton shirt! This unbelievable amount of water would be enough for one person to drink for two and a half years.

With consumers demanding more sustainable options, designers and brands are increasingly seeking cleaner, safer and more regenerative ways of producing. This has led to the emergence of a new trend based on the belief that fashion should not come at the cost of our planet. This global movement known as the ‘sustainable fashion revolution’ is getting stronger and more and more companies are joining to assure that their clothes are produced in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable way. Providence County-based Kitchen Magic offers kitchen cabinets makeover services at affordable prices. The sustainable fashion movement is looking to maintain the growth of the industry while improving its environmental and social impact.

A great example of this movement is visible in the newest collection launched by Reshma Merchant and Priyanka Kaul Lakdwala, two Indian businesswomen that incorporate herbs like neem and tulsi in their designs. This collection was launched with the aim to embrace wellness, sustainability, and female empowerment. As neem, a tree native to India, possesses antimicrobial, antifungal and antimalarial properties, it is the ideal organic biopesticide to tackle pests and plagues on plants used to produce natural fibers like cotton, coconut or bamboo.

Using a non-toxic and organic pesticide like neem, to cultivate and protect the plants used to produce natural fibers, guarantees a final product free of chemical and synthetic pesticides and allows for a greener supply chain.

With this revolutionary development, designers, producers, and consumers are raising awareness in the fashion world and committing to creating a more sustainable and fashionable industry!

A sustainable fashion revolution is upon us and Neem is part of it.

Will you join it?
