By August 2, 2017, we will have used more from Mother Nature than she can replenish in the whole year. For the rest of the year, we will be living on resources taken from future generations. More ecological resources and services are used than the world can regenerate through overfishing, overharvesting forests, and emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than forests can sequester.

Earth Overshoot Day, also known as Ecological Debt Day, has slowly but surely moved up the calendar year over the past 20 years, showing a clear view of how humanity exploits planetary resources that are essential for survival. The world’s population currently consumes the equivalent of about 1.7 earths every year. By 2030, we will need the equivalent of two Earths. In order to survive and thrive, we must begin using resources more responsibly and sustainably.

According to the Global Footprint Network, 60% of humanity’s ecological footprint is carbon. Inefficiencies in our global food supply make up 26% of this footprint. That combines carbon from agricultural practices and food waste! Increasing the efficiency of food production, distribution and waste management is a great way to move the date back and conserve our resources. Another effective way is by switching to more sustainable agricultural methods by using neem-based pesticides and fertilizers. Conventional agriculture is responsible for the unprecedented degradation of soil. When neem is used, it improves soil carbon sequestration capacity as well as leaving it, the water, the air, and your body, free of dangerous (synthetic) chemicals.

What are you doing to #MoveTheDate and conserve your home?
