The Cannabis industry has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, with dispensaries now open in many states across the United States and globally. Due to its status as illegal under federal law in the US, cannabis is not considered a crop, which is why it is not regulated for human consumption. Therefore, many growers use synthetic pesticides which can be extremely harmful when inhaled or ingested in cannabis products.

As a cash crop, growers rely on synthetics and chemicals to guarantee the growth of their plants. These synthetic pesticides can be transferred into cannabis smoke at a rate as high as 70%, allowing chemicals to enter the bloodstream without traveling through the digestive system directly.

Processed products including oils, waxes, edibles, and others made from extracts that concentrate the active ingredients in cannabis may also concentrate pesticide residues.

The Journal of Toxicology states that they found levels of pesticide residue in medicinal plants as high as 69.5%. Even organic farms are often at risk of suffering pesticide contamination from nearby crops treated with these substances.

Growing Cannabis With Neem

Azadirachtin, a vital substance extracted from the seeds of the neem tree, does not poison insects as synthetic pesticides do. Instead, it triggers a stop-eating response, so bugs starve to death. Neem is effective against many pests, including aphids, beetles, cockroaches, flies, fruit flies, fungal infections, grasshoppers, leaf miners, mosquitoes, moths, nematodes, snails, spider mites and thrips.

Since 2010, field trials on medicinal plants treated with the pure essence of neem were conducted in seven US states, all with positive results. The trial groups showed improved plant health and increased yields at an average of 55.6%, and as much as 82.7%.

In field trials, six strains of medicinal plants that were sprayed with neem and showed the following improvement:

  • Green Crack: 29.7%
  • Purple Afghani: 64.9%
  • Fire Bubba Kush: 47.5%
  • Master Kush: 61.4%
  • Critical Mass: 82.7%
  • Burmese Kush: 50.2%

Commercial growers who grow with neem have gone on to win awards at various High Times Cannabis Cups. The Strongest Strain on Earth winner, Ghost Train Haze #1, was grown by Michigan’s King of Cannabis, the Leaf Doctor, who swears by neem products.

Neem offers a natural solution for commercial and home growers who want to guarantee that their cannabis plants are safe for consumption. To discover the myriad of benefits that neem offers, check out our other blog entrances here.

One of the best-kept secrets of the food industry is the sheer amount of chemicals that are sprayed on crops! Why does that affect you, as a consumer? The reason is simple – many of those synthetic chemicals are known or probable carcinogens. These synthetic chemicals are only ever tested in isolation; therefore the effects when they are mixed are unknown. We are frequently exposed to a combination of these toxic chemicals in the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we swim in.

One of these dangerous, extremely common chemicals is glyphosate. Glyphosate has been under much scrutiny recently for its dangerous health risks. However, in most commercial formulations, toxic agents called adjuvants accompany glyphosate. These adjuvants are used to increase glyphosate’s penetration into plants, making glyphosate more toxic! Additionally, these adjuvants are never included in long-term research relating to glyphosate, even though they are most likely more toxic than glyphosate itself! Adjuvants, though they are thought of to be inert, like water, aren’t included in pesticide acceptable daily intakes. These represent a dark side to the pesticide and food system – a system that hides too much from consumers.

How can you solve this problem? There are two ways: demand change, and demand natural neem-based products. With neem-based products, there is no worry about health risks. When consumers demand change, big companies must comply or risk losing profit. When you, as the consumer, become more aware of the changes that you can make as a person, you can change the world! And what better way to change it than by evolving our agricultural system into one that is more sustainable, more green and healthier for you, your family, and your community?

Are you a part of the organic food trend?
If you are like the majority of the population, you have at one time or another bought something with an organic label. However, do you know where that organic product is coming from?

With a global trend of increasing consumer demand for organic products, companies are racing to keep up. Tyson Foods Inc., the second largest meat producer in the world, is pledging to produce antibiotic-free poultry by summer 2017, and many other meat and food producers worldwide are right behind them!

USDA-certified organic food sales jumped by a whopping 10% in 2016, whereas conventional foodstuffs rose by a mere 0.7%, showing a growing consumer trend that is leaning towards natural and organic products. As consumers become more knowledgeable, more and more will be demanding organic foods, which are not processed with damaging synthetics or GMOs. The increasing consumer demand for organic products is vital to our planet’s health and survival. Why? Many rising disease trends and environmental problems can be linked back to synthetic chemical exposure, particularly from the agricultural sector. This is why a shift to more sustainable, organic farming is crucial.

Additionally, organic farming is more sustainable than conventional farming, offers fewer health risks for humanity, and is beneficial to the environment and ecosystems around it on many levels. As consumers, we must continue to demand sustainable, healthy change from food companies. Shifting to sustainable and organic agriculture will be facilitated by consumer demand. By using natural biopesticides and biofertilizers like neem, we can minimize use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers around the world, cost effectively and sustainably. But it all begins with you, the consumer. Bring us into the sustainable future that our planet needs!
