One of the more practical and achievable ways to cleanse our environment and ensure an equitable future is to lock up, or sequester, more carbon from the atmosphere through the simple process of planting more trees worldwide.

Neem has a high rate of photosynthesis and liberates more oxygen than many other tree species, being able to ‘fix’ more than 14 μmol of CO2 m-1 sec-1. This provides a good platform for maximum CO2 fixation, while serving as a shield against other pollution components.

Today, 14% of all humans who have ever existed are currently alive. It took 1800 years for the world’s population to reach one billion. Fast-forward 200 years and the human race had increased to 6 billion, and an additional 12 years for our last billion.

Though global fertility rates are falling, a 2014 study by the United Nations and the University of Washington demonstrates there is a 70% probability that the global population will reach 11 billion by the end of this century.

This drastic increase in population would require a 70% increase in food production and 100% more protein. How will we accomplish this seemingly insurmountable goal? Through natural alternatives, like neem!

We currently use 1.6x the earth’s available resources. Unless moves are made to explore sustainability, living on our planet may mean having to make do with less. Farmland availability is shrinking, much of it to make way for expanding urban populations. Crop yields are no longer expanding and the ‘Green Revolution’ of the 1960s and 1970s is now just a distant memory. A new and more efficient way of producing food is necessary in order to solve the challenges of a rising population.

Sustaining the needs of a global population that has tripled in the last century alone is one of the major challenges of modern man. The global population has increased by 45% to 7 billion since the dawn of the new millennium, and is expected to hit at least 9.7 billion by 2050. By 2100, the human population will have surpassed 11.2 billion.

12 million hectares (29.6 million acres) of arable land is degrading each year, a rate 30-35x that was experienced 50 years ago. How will we accomplish the awesome challenge of feeding the world’s increasing population? With sustainable, natural resources, like neem!
